Topological Aspects of the Non-adiabatic Berry Phase
The topology of the non-adiabatic parameter space bundle is discussed for
evolution of exact cyclic state vectors in Berry's original example of split
angular momentum eigenstates. It turns out that the change in topology occurs
at a critical frequency. The first Chern number that classifies these bundles
is proportional to angular momentum. The non-adiabatic principal bundle over
the parameter space is not well-defined at the critical frequency.Comment: 14 pages, Dep. of Physics, Uni. of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas

Multi-particle Correlations in Quaternionic Quantum Systems
We investigate the outcomes of measurements on correlated, few-body quantum
systems described by a quaternionic quantum mechanics that allows for regions
of quaternionic curvature. We find that a multi-particle interferometry
experiment using a correlated system of four nonrelativistic, spin-half
particles has the potential to detect the presence of quaternionic curvature.
Two-body systems, however, are shown to give predictions identical to those of
standard quantum mechanics when relative angles are used in the construction of
the operators corresponding to measurements of particle spin components.Comment: REVTeX 3.0, 16 pages, no figures, UM-P-94/54, RCHEP-94/1
The gap exponent of XXZ model in a transverse field
We have calculated numerically the gap exponent of the anisotropic Heisenberg
model in the presence of the transverse magnetic field. We have implemented the
modified Lanczos method to obtain the excited states of our model with the same
accuracy of the ground state. The coefficient of the leading term in the
perturbation expansion diverges in the thermodynamic limit (N --> infinity). We
have obtained the relation between this divergence and the scaling behaviour of
the energy gap. We have found that the opening of gap in the presence of
transverse field scales with a critical exponent which depends on the
anisotropy parameter (Delta). Our numerical results are in well agreement with
the field theoretical approach in the whole range of the anisotropy parameter,
-1 < Delta < 1.Comment: 6 pages and 4 figure
Renormalization of Coulomb interaction in graphene: computing observable quantities
We address the computation of physical observables in graphene in the
presence of Coulomb interactions of density-density type modeled with a static
Coulomb potential within a quantum field theory perturbative renormalization
scheme. We show that all the divergences encountered in the physical quantities
are associated to the one loop electron self-energy and can be determined
without ambiguities by a proper renormalization of the Fermi velocity. The
renormalization of the photon polarization to second order in perturbation
theory - a quantity directly related to the optical conductivity - is given as
an example.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
NS Fivebrane and Tachyon Condensation
We argue that a semi-infinite D6-brane ending on an NS5-brane can be obtained
from the condensation of the tachyon on the unstable D9-brane of type IIA
theory. The construction uses a combination of the descriptions of these branes
as solitons of the worldvolume theory of the D9-brane. The NS5-brane, in
particular, involves a gauge bundle which is operator valued, and hence is
better thought of as a gerbe.Comment: 20 pages, harvma
Quantum Stability of (2+1)-Spacetimes with Non-Trivial Topology
Quantum fields are investigated in the (2+1)-open-universes with non-trivial
topologies by the method of images. The universes are locally de Sitter
spacetime and anti-de Sitter spacetime. In the present article we study
spacetimes whose spatial topologies are a torus with a cusp and a sphere with
three cusps as a step toward the more general case. A quantum energy momentum
tensor is obtained by the point stripping method. Though the cusps are no
singularities, the latter cusps cause the divergence of the quantum field. This
suggests that only the latter cusps are quantum mechanically unstable. Of
course at the singularity of the background spacetime the quantum field
diverges. Also the possibility of the divergence of topological effect by a
negative spatial curvature is discussed. Since the volume of the negatively
curved space is larger than that of the flat space, one see so many images of a
single source by the non-trivial topology. It is confirmed that this divergence
does not appear in our models of topologies. The results will be applicable to
the case of three dimensional multi black hole\cite{BR}.Comment: 17 pages, revtex, 3 uuencoded figures containe
The Standard Model Fermion Spectrum From Complex Projective spaces
It is shown that the quarks and leptons of the standard model, including a
right-handed neutrino, can be obtained by gauging the holonomy groups of
complex projective spaces of complex dimensions two and three. The spectrum
emerges as chiral zero modes of the Dirac operator coupled to gauge fields and
the demonstration involves an index theorem analysis on a general complex
projective space in the presence of topologically non-trivial SU(n)xU(1) gauge
fields. The construction may have applications in type IIA string theory and
non-commutative geometry.Comment: 13 pages. Typset using LaTeX and JHEP3 style files. Minor typos

Syk-dependent Phosphorylation of CLEC-2: A Novel Mechanism of Hem-Immunoreceptor Tyrosine-Based Activation Motif Signaling
The C-type lectin-like receptor CLEC-2 signals via phosphorylation of a single cytoplasmic YXXL sequence known as a hem-immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (hemITAM). In this study, we show that phosphorylation of CLEC-2 by the snake toxin rhodocytin is abolished in the absence of the tyrosine kinase Syk but is not altered in the absence of the major platelet Src family kinases, Fyn, Lyn, and Src, or the tyrosine phosphatase CD148, which regulates the basal activity of Src family kinases. Further, phosphorylation of CLEC-2 by rhodocytin is not altered in the presence of the Src family kinase inhibitor PP2, even though PLCγ2 phosphorylation and platelet activation are abolished. A similar dependence of phosphorylation of CLEC-2 on Syk is also seen in response to stimulation by an IgG mAb to CLEC-2, although interestingly CLEC-2 phosphorylation is also reduced in the absence of Lyn. These results provide the first definitive evidence that Syk mediates phosphorylation of the CLEC-2 hemITAM receptor with Src family kinases playing a critical role further downstream through the regulation of Syk and other effector proteins, providing a new paradigm in signaling by YXXL-containing receptors
Topological Phase Transitions and Holonomies in the Dimer Model
We demonstrate that the classical dimer model defined on a toroidal hexagonal
lattice acquires holonomy phases in the thermodynamic limit. When all
activities are equal the lattice sizes must be considered mod 6 in which case
the finite size corrections to the bulk partition function correspond to a
massless Dirac Fermion in the presence of a flat connection with nontrivial
holonomy. For general bond activities we find that the phase transition in this
model is a topological one, where the torus degenerates and its modular
parameter becomes real at the critical temperature. We argue that these
features are generic to bipartite dimer models and we present a more general
lattice whose continuum partition function is that of a massive Dirac Fermion.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Minor corrections with additional figure
